Bright Shadow does Cannes

Just got back from a massive shoot at the Cannes film festival but there is no time to relax as it’s none stop with another big shoot in Shanghai. But what an experience Cannes was seeing it all through the camera lense on the front line rather than through photographs and TV screens. We were producing a number of commercial videos for one of our major clients, which had to be uploaded every day during the festival. The Flip cam (http://www.theflip.com/en-us/) was a lifesaver – its what they use to get the outside car shots in Top Gear and it worked wonders on the red carpet to get even closer than the big HD cams can get from the sidelines making our videos as good as if you had been there yourself.
Its amazing what you can see when you are part of the TV press. We had many funny moments for example when Clovis Cornillac came on the carpet with his girlfriend. After posing for the first wave of press he made the mistake of giving his partner a small peck on the cheek. After that the photographers went wild every new set he would approach they would scream “the kiss, THE KISS!” So he was forced to put on a show for the raucous crowd with each new clinch getting steamier and steamier until at the top of the stairs his response to what had almost become a chant – “the kiss, the kiss, THE KISS,” he took his girlfriend in his arms, leaned her right back and gave a true Hollywood kiss on those iconic steps of Cannes, the press and I imagine his girlfriend loved it!
There were embarrassing moments though for example when Aishwarya Rai took to the carpet, the photographers geared up for a photo frenzy but just as she was posing two women cut in front, not seeing the Indian beauty posing for the flashing camera. Assuming the photographers wanted to take their picture they stopped and gave their best Hollywood dazzle only to have the photographers scream “get out the way!” Turning they spotted Aishwarya standing patiently behind them – there were two very red faces as they scuttled away.
I also never realized just how tiring it is for the cameramen who are responsible for all that equipment. I have often seen them slouched on the sidelines, sitting on the steps in their tux and I have to say I used to think how awful that looked but having experienced it first hand I can tell you after hours in the heat with that heavy equipment you rest when you can.
Anyway it really was a great experience and we got some amazing shots, talent looked stunning and the client was very happy – so we look forward to next years festival but now its back to Shanghai to shoot with an army of extras on the biggest stage the city can offer and believe me in China we are talking massive!!! More of that to come…
